The planes used by the 9th US Air Force consisted mainly of three types

    • P-47 Thunderbolt
    • P-51 Mustang
    • P-61 Black Widow used by Night Fighter Squadrons
  • Troop Carriers
    • C-46 Cargo or Freight Transporter
    • C-47 Troop Transporter and Tug Plane
    • C-53 used as Air Ambulance and Troop Transporter
    • CG-4A Glider
  • Extras
    • F-3 converted A-20 Havoc used by Night Pathfinder Squadron
    • F-4 converted P-38 Lightning
    • F-5 converted P-38 Lightning used by Photographic Reconnaisance Squadrons
    • F-6 converted P-51 Mustang used by Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons
    • L-5 Sentinal used by Liason squadrons

They were stationed mostly in Essex in East Anglia for most of their time in England until final preparations for the D-Day invasion necessitated that they take up forward positions near the south coast.

Planes arrived in England either flown across from America or shipped over in boxes and were assembled here.
